Click here to download a letter from a business coalition called MaineSense, signed by hundreds of Maine businesses, in support of LD 1333, the health care reform bill sponsored by Rep. Wes Richardson (R- Warren).
The letter describes the effort to create a self-insurance program called MaineSense:
“Our companies, along with several hundred Maine employers, the Maine Wellness Association and Martin’s Point Healthcare, are exploring a new way to deliver health insurance in Maine that would be the first of its kind. Formed in the mold of the extremely successful worker’s compensation self –insurance trusts, this employer-owned “health captive” would allow us to design and provide health insurance plans that suit the needs of our employees, provide incentives for better health, and promote efficiency in the delivery system.”
LD 1333 contains provisions that would allow for the creation of the MaineSense program. The letter concludes:
“We know the current health care system is broken – our employees muddle through it every day. MaineSense is driven by the people who pay for and use medical services. We are ready to start this new program, and need your support as legislation for “Health Captives” comes before you in the next few weeks. Let’s all work to engage Mainers in a positive cycle of better health, preventative care and ultimately lower costs.”
