Senator Collins has been bullied by powerful special interests.
But she did not back down.
Rather, Senator Collins made the final tax relief bill even better for working Mainers.
Speaking on the Senate floor this afternoon, Senator Collins mentioned big improvements she made to the final bill:
“Let me start by discussing the effect of this bill on individuals and families. Throughout this debate I’ve emphasized that reforms to our outdated tax code must help working families.
I therefore authored three key amendments that were retained in the final package.
My amendments allow families to deduct up to $10,000 in state and local taxes, increase the deduction for medical expenses, and protect tax-free contributions to retirement savings.”
In her speech, Senator Collins outlined even more economic benefits from the tax relief bill she played a critical role in improving. These are benefits for Maine workers and Maine small businesses that Senator Collins presents in detail.
Furthermore, Senator Collins refuted the bogus argument that tax breaks for Maine workers and small businesses will come at the expense of Medicare. That is simply a false claim.
As part of this process, Senator Collins has also won support for healthcare reform that will protect coverage for people with pre-existing conditions in a truly affordable way. This reform is modeled on a successful Maine program under Governor LePage that, sadly, Obamacare wiped out.
Maine’s motto, ‘Dirigo’, means ‘I Lead.’ Today, Senator Collins made our state’s motto more deserving than ever.
