On this day, April 14, in 1865 Abraham Lincoln, the great emancipator, was assassinated.

President Abraham Lincoln, the greatest American President and the first Republican President, led our beloved country through the most horrific time in our history, civil war, and changed the racial future of The United States of America for ever. We can be proud as Republicans that Abraham Lincoln is the rock that our Party stands.

Southern-sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, 147 years ago today, five days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court house shot President Lincoln at Ford’s Theater while Lincoln was attending a play. The next morning at 7:22 am President Lincoln died.

May he rest in peace!

By Rep. Phil Curtis

Maine House Majority Leader Phil Curtis originally submitted this piece to the Maine Today Media for publication. The papers refused to run it based on its criticism of the paper’s owner and his spouse. This is an amazing act of political censorship, and ironically reinforces the concerns Rep. Curtis outlines in this piece. The entire, unedited column is featured below.

What do you get for the congresswoman who has everything? Southern Maine’s Democratic congresswoman, Chellie Pingree, recently received the gift of a lifetime from her husband, hedge fund mogul Donald Sussman.

It wasn’t diamonds or pearls. It wasn’t a new jet, a yacht or any other favorite trinket of the “one percenters.” It wasn’t pretty, fun or even profitable, but it definitely helped her career.

It was her very own chain of newspapers.

Donald Sussman recently bought a 75-percent ownership stake in Maine Today Media, the company that owns the Portland Press Herald, the Kennebec Journal (Augusta) and the Morning Sentinel (Waterville). These are three of the five largest newspapers in the state.

Democrats routinely decry the influence that big corporations and big money hold over our political process. How hypocritical it is to see two of their standard-bearers—the congresswoman who is a leader in the “progressive caucus” and her husband who is one of the largest patrons of Democratic causes in the country—use their money to infiltrate the institutions that give Maine people their news.

Sussman pledges to stay out of any editorial decisions the newspapers make. I have news for Donald: buying a newspaper is an editorial decision. No matter how much Donald says outwardly that he wants his new media outlets to be unbiased, bias will be inherent and intractable. Journalism ethics expert Bob Steele called Sussman’s ownership a legitimate concern.

Whenever negative news about Congresswoman Pingree or the legion of liberal activist groups that Sussman bankrolls comes out, the editorial staff at Maine Today Media will undoubtedly ponder—even if only for a moment—the reception their reporting will receive when it reaches Sussman’s doorstep or his laptop screen.

In the 2010 election cycle, the Portland Press Herald endorsed Dean Scontras for Congress, the Republican challenger to Pingree. What would the result have been if Pingree and her husband owned 75 percent of the newspaper? A disclaimer would not have sufficed.

In recent news stories, the Maine Today papers have been sheepishly disclosing their new ownership. Instead of the customary disclaimer at the end of a story whenever a conflict exists, the writers have been surreptitiously slipping the fact that Sussman controls the paper into the body of the story. The “disclaimers” stand out as patchwork solutions to the massive conflict that can never go away as long as Sussman and Pingree own the newspapers. They are mere Band-Aids on the severed artery of honest reporting in Maine.

Furthermore, what does Sussman see in the ailing newspapers? Everyone knows that newspapers are a dying breed and that the Internet is quickly rendering them obsolete. Their stock, consequently, is going nowhere but down. In 1998, the Gannett family, longtime owners of the newspapers, sold them to the company that owns The Seattle Times for $213 million. Ten years later, they were sold to Maine Today Media for an undisclosed price. Sussman picked up his 75 percent stake for only $3.3 million, giving the chain a value of $4.4 million.

Maybe he sees something in the papers. But Sussman is not a Warren Buffett-style investor. He doesn’t follow a model of buying fundamentally sound companies at good bargains and turning them around over time. His style has been to earn fast money through complex financial deals, similar to the kind of seat-of-your-pants investing that crashed the housing market.

So maybe he wants to finally settle down in Maine and build something for a change. Why then would he not want to be involved in the day-to-day operations of the business?

One thing I know about Mainers is that you won’t pull wool over their eyes. They know a shady deal when they see one, and this, ladies and gentlemen, is a shady deal if I ever saw one.

Representative Phil Curtis (R-Madison) is the Majority Leader in the Maine House of Representatives.

The Maine Federation of Republican Women (MFRW) met in Augusta on March 28 at the State GOP Headquarters on Higgins St. Many members stayed after the meeting to help prepare packets for the upcoming GOP Convention. President Ellen Greeke invited Secretary Charlie Summers to join us and he presented many aspects of his position as Secretary of State, and especially focused on the busy season of petition gathering.

The MFRW will have a booth at the GOP Convention in May and they will be raising the seed money to start a scholarship in of honor of retiring Senator Olympia Snowe. So please stop by the booth on May 5 & 6.

We have exciting news about the May meeting on May 23rd at 10:00AM in Lincolnville, Me. Sara Jo Odom, National Federation of Republican Women Secretary will be coming to our meeting. She has ties to New England and because of her familiarity with this part of the country, she volunteered to be the Region 6 Director, which includes: Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Virginia. [Vermont does not have an organization at this time]

AUGUSTA, ME – Angus King’s wind farm dealings are now the subject of a congressional investigation. King has answered some questions from the press, but there’s a lot he still needs to explain.

Here are some questions the media should ask Angus King:

- Why did King’s close personal friend, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, write a letter of support to the Department of Energy for the $102 million loan guarantee, when the project wasn’t even in her district? (Congressman Michaud, who represents the project site, did not write a letter of support for the project.)
- King’s Record Hill Wind project received a $102 million government-backed loan. How much of that government-backed money did King receive when he sold his stake in the company just before the congressional report was released? (King has thus far refused to release details of the sale.)
- The Congressional Oversight Committee has shown that King applied for an ‘innovative technology’ grant, but the technology he used for the project was clearly not ‘innovative’. How does Angus King explain his company’s efforts to secure the loan under false pretenses?

King’s company was told on March 14 that it was under congressional investigation. King sold his stake in the company on March 19. King’s campaign has said he was unaware of the investigation when he sold his stake in the company. It strains credibility to think King sold his half of a hundred-million dollar company without knowing about the investigation. But Angus King continues to bank on the reality that the press won’t ask the tough questions.

It’s time for the press to hold Angus King to the same standard as other political figures.

The Maine Republican Party is having this year’s State Convention on May 5th and May 6th, at the Augusta Civic Center.

We are also providing activist training for political volunteers for free on Friday, May 4th, at the Augusta Civic Center. If you would like to attend this informative activist training session to get prepared for the upcoming 2012 campaign season (lunch will be provided), please e-mail Rick Tetrev with the Maine G.O.P. at rick@mainegop.com.

We are also trying to find volunteers who can help through-out the convention weekend. From gathering meal tickets, to moving chairs, or just lending a helping hand when needed, your help will be much appreciated. Just making yourself available here and there for a few minutes at a time would be a huge help. Please e-mail Mike Quatrano with the Maine GOP, at mikeq@mainegop.com if you would like to volunteer and he will provide further information.

Finally, I would like to bring to your attention our Page program. Our Page program gives teenage children the unique opportunity to experience the State Convention. While helping staff coordinate, the Pages will have the opportunity to see behind the scenes activities, get their picture taken with highly recognized Republicans, and even a chance to tour the Blaine House after the convention. So if you have a child who is 14 to 18 years old and would like to participate (or know someone who does), please contact Mike Quatrano at mikeq@mainegop.com.
