AUGUSTA- Maine Republican Party Chair Demi Kouzounas issued the following statement following the deadly incident in Charlottesville this weekend:
“It hurts my heart to see that racism is still alive in America.
“As a first-generation American, whose parents came to this country and worked hard to make a good living and provide for their family, I can say with confidence: there is no room for this type of hatred and racism in Maine. There is no room for it in America.
“Though we are far from being in the south, Maine has its own complex history with racism and white supremacy, from the KKK to Malaga Island. We are not immune to that history.
“This is why I cannot emphasize enough: white supremacist groups and racism are not welcome in our party, they are not welcome in our state. Racism is evil, it goes against what we stand for as Americans and as Republicans. It goes against everything my family worked so hard to achieve.
“We need to come together, we need to stop the divisive rhetoric, stop pointing fingers. The responsibility falls on each and every one of us to ensure that this violence and intolerance stops. The burden is on our shoulders, and I can tell you that it weighs heavy on my heart.”
