Maine GOP Chair Statement on Dems Threatening Medicaid Lawsuit

AUGUSTA—Today, Maine Republican Party Chair Dr. Demi Kouzounas made the following statement on Democrat threats to sue Governor LePage over Medicaid expansion:

“Democrats are threatening no less than to sue our state into bankruptcy to expand welfare. The Governor has made clear Medicaid expansion must not be funded through tax hikes, raiding the emergency reserve fund, or cutting services for the elderly or disabled–an eminently reasonable position. Democrats simply need to put forward a plan for Maine to afford this expansion of welfare.

Suing the Governor would be suing all of us. We have a massive opioid crisis, a challenge providing care to our elderly, high energy costs, and a huge waiting list for services for our disabled neighbors. Forcing cuts in these areas to fund welfare for able-bodied adults would be wildly irresponsible and must be rejected.

These threats from Democrats appear to be a reckless tactic to try and avoid responsibility for their own plan. Democrats can’t have their cake and eat it too. They need to come to the table with a plan to pay for Medicaid expansion, instead of a plan to sue Maine taxpayers into bankruptcy.”
