Republicans stand strong for budget that protects Maine’s
economy improves Maine schools
Augusta- Maine GOP offered congratulations to Governor Paul LePage, Senate President Michael Thibodeau and House Republican Leader Ken Fredette following the signing of a budget and the end of the government shutdown early Tuesday morning.
The new biennial budget contains numerous conservative victories, such as the elimination of the 3% surtax while also eliminating the proposed lodging tax increase and enacting significant education reforms that will drive more money directly into Maine classrooms.
Maine GOP Chair Demi Kouzounas commended GOP leaders for their drive and dedication in negotiating an end to the shutdown, “Republicans in the Legislature moved the ball down the field as a team, negotiating and fending off demands for tax and spending increases. Now, with the help of Governor LePage, we have put the ball in the end zone. Thank you to Republicans who worked from start to finish to get a better deal for Maine's hard-working taxpayers.”
Chair Kouzounas continued, “Thanks to the professionalism and strength in negotiations of Senate President Thibodeau and House Republican Leader Fredette, Republicans have delivered a budget our Governor can finally sign in good faith. Republican Legislators stood strong together in their respective chambers to create an environment where their strength and resolve won the debate for Maine taxpayers and students.
While it wasn’t an easy journey to reach this point, we couldn’t be more proud of the hardworking people representing the Maine GOP here in Augusta.”
