Maine GOP Chairman Richard Bennett issued the following statement on the fliers found at Bates college:
Sadly, the Maine media and some Maine Democrats continue to make the Bates flier story a partisan story and use it to attack Republicans. As such, this is the final Maine GOP statement on the Bates flier situation.
“The Maine GOP had nothing to do with this flier. We denounce the idea of anyone spreading false information to suppress students from voting.
As Republicans, we believe everyone should obey the law and be treated equally under the law. We understand that there is confusion related to students voting. We encourage them to vote in accordance with Maine law.
Further, we welcome young people to become residents of our state. Our prosperity depends on it.
In the future, we propose both parties conduct joint voter education efforts on campuses across Maine to prevent such confusion. Trying to educate college students through tweets and dueling press releases will only create more confusion.
Maine GOP teams on campuses are working to ensure students get out to vote. This confusion hurts our efforts as well.
Maine’s college students deserve better.”
