Chairman Richard Bennett issued the following statement on immigration reform today August 16th, 2016:
The United States of America has always been a beacon of hope and a safe harbor for the downtrodden and those who suffer under tyranny. Sadly, we are increasingly seeing this promise dashed by Washington politicians and their inability to fix a broken immigration system. The Obama-Clinton Administration has failed to fix this broken system, choosing to act illegally and refusing to enforce the laws already in place.
Immigration, a key element of our country that once made us so strong, has become a matter of national security. With the recently released information about Adnan Fazeli, a refugee who lived in Freeport and was killed fighting for extreme Islam in Lebanon, this conversation of national security has hit home for many Mainers.
We have to ask: what more will it take for President Obama and Secretary Clinton Administration to recognize that their misguided and illegal policies are failing Americans?
And we need to address not only how Washington’s sclerosis on this issue is failing Americans, but also how the Obama-Clinton leadership is failing the thousands of legal immigrants and well-meaning refugees who come across our borders every day.
How we move forward from stories like Adnan Fazeli’s is how we define ourselves as Americans and how we ensure the United States remains a beacon of hope, rather than a field in which extremists can sow terror.
