Irresponsible Emily: How Emily Cain’s Past Rhetoric About Iran Deal Proves Her Position Was Irresponsible

Cain attacked those attempting to oppose Iran deal as ‘irresponsible’, but the truly irresponsible position is how Iran deal allows United States taxpayer funds to be funneled to terrorist organizations

AUGUSTA – On September 22, 2015, politician Emily Cain, who is seeking the Democrat nomination for Maine’s Second Congressional District in 2016, attacked opponents of the Obama administration’s Iran nuclear deal, saying “to make the Iran deal political is irresponsible” when responding to questions about whether she supported the deal.

Ms. Cain then went on to say she would likely have followed Rep. Chellie Pingree and Sen. Angus King in supporting President Obama on the Iran deal.

Recent admissions by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, however, prove that the ‘irresponsible’ position on the Iran deal was not held by those who opposed it, as Ms. Cain so boldly claimed, but by those who supported it.

Secretary of State Kerry is now on the record admitting that some of the $150 Billion being provided to Iran is likely to go to funding terrorist organizations, and that the United States can do nothing to stop it.

Speaking in Davos, CNN Reports:

“When asked about whether some the $150 billion in sanctions relief to Iran would go to terrorist groups, Kerry reiterated that, after settling debts, Iran would receive closer to $55 billion. He conceded some of that could go to groups considered terrorists, saying there was nothing the U.S. could do to prevent that.

“I think that some of it will end up in the hands of the IRGC or other entities, some of which are labeled terrorists,” he said in the interview in Davos, referring to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. “You know, to some degree, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that every component of that can be prevented.”

Maine GOP Chairman Rick Bennett commented on Emily Cain’s position. “The people of Maine know that if you provide billions of dollars to state sponsors of terrorism, those funds will flow to terrorist organizations. Secretary of State Kerry has now admitted as much. Opposing the Iran deal was the right thing to do, and Emily Cain has clearly demonstrated she lacks the judgment to represent Maine in Congress with her irresponsible, politically motivated position.”
