MAINE GOP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S ACTION ON OPIOID EPIDEMIC

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: October 27, 2017

AUGUSTA – Today, Maine GOP Executive Director Jason Savage released the following statement on President Trump’s action to take on Maine’s and the nation’s opioid epidemic:

“I am heartened by President Trump’s commitment to combating this crisis destroying the lives of thousands in Maine and millions nationwide. Drug overdoses now cause more deaths than shootings or car accidents.

My family has experienced the loss and pain of this epidemic, as have thousands of other Maine people. This epidemic reaches into the heart of every Maine community and touches every Maine person in one way or another. There is no broader reaching, more personal or painful problem facing Maine right now.

Sadly, many of the attempts to reverse this epidemic have been inadequate, and today our country is flooded with cheap, deadly drugs like heroin and fentanyl pouring across our southern border, while Americans continue to become addicted to prescription painkillers.

President’s Trump’s action will expand access to substance abuse services, increase treatment for those addicted to opioids, and reduce the supply of these killer drugs in America. In Maine, where this crisis has hit particularly hard, we are deeply grateful and stand by to help the President in this necessary fight for the heart and soul of Maine.

We owe it to our neighbors who are currently struggling with addiction, their families, and generations to come to fight this battle to win, and leave nobody behind.”
